Carson's talented Aunt Trista made a gorgeous quilt for him to brighten up his bedroom (otherwise known as a walk-in closet), and we have been terribly remiss in not posting a photo sooner. In case you are interested, Trista's quilts are available through Schatzi Baby and Etsy
Jason and I went to Ed's house today to hang with him and Isabelle and Camden. In celebration of Jay's birthday Ed made chocolate cupcakes and let the kids decorate them.
Just before Carson was born, Jason began climbing out of his crib. The trouble was that he knew how to climb over the rail, but the dismount proved trickier and generally resulted in him crashing to the floor. We discussed, at the time, putting him in a regular bed, but it seemed like a lot of change at once with Carson's imminent arrival.
Recently Jason has been attempting to climb out of the crib with increased frequency, but we always caught him before he could swing his second leg over the rail. Who says two college educated parents aren't smarter than a toddler? Well, apparently Jason. On Saturday, we found him sitting on his floor playing, having stealthily mastered the dismount, when we thought he was napping. So, we removed the crib and most of his toys from his room and he slept on his mattress on the floor for two nights prior to the arrival of his new bed. That almost sounds punitive...making him sleep on the floor, but I actually think it was a good way to transition him to the bed as the first night he kept falling off the mattress.

When Laurie and I went into Jason's room this morning to wish him a happy second birthday, we found he had already begun the day right by wriggling out of his pajamas and straight into his birthday suit (we added the shoes later).

Jason Tucker and his lovely daughter Maggie came over yesterday afternoon to hang out and play at the park. Maggie is nearly Jay's age and they had a great time together, generally sharing and not making each other cry too much. On their way out Jay was not to be denied in giving Maggie a good-bye hug.

I've been steadily drawing over the summer, slowly filling my moleskine and working on some watercolor paper. Here are a couple of drawings that represent where I am right now.
Last night Jay and I went to the Porter Square Book Store and I read parts of Betty Edward's Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain while Jay looked at truck books. The book mentioned drawing negative spaces and filling the space you plan to draw in with light gray shade (the neutral tone). During naptime today I concentrated on these things and I was pretty happy with how this picture came out. It is small and messy (4B lead), but the eyes general shading are as good as anything I've done.
This was a doodle that begged for some color and I liked the finished result. My model was a delicious looking dessert I found on Flickr.
